My friend Ken

Created by Graham 2 years ago
I first met Ken around 2010.  As a volunteer pilot for the Project Propeller event, Ken had the misfortune of having me as his allocated pilot.  We were joined by other members of the Grantham Aicrew Association, and formed something of team in the following years.  With Ken's passing, the last of the "musketeers" has left the circuit.

As well as the Propeller days themselves, we enjoyed aviation-themed days out, with flying visits to Duxford, Elvington and RAF Leeming.  It was always a humbling and interesting experience to listen to the veterans' stories of the war years - despite their long lives, they would recall those days with absolute clarity.  I vividly remember Ken's account of visiting his home on leave, and his father virtually throwing him under the kitchen table because the V1 raids on London had just started, and there was an alert.

We remained firm friends even after my flying days were over, and shared Ken's birthdays and Christmas lunches with the Association at RAF Cranwell.  It was our joy to meet Diana on those occasions as well, a truly remarkable lady and faithful companion.

Ken was always a friend to my children, and daughter in particular, his own "Tiger Lilly".  I shall always remember Ken with the greatest fondness - a rascal, a raconteur, a bon viveur and gentleman in one package.  We will all miss him greatly.

Blue skies and tail winds, my friend - our lives were richer for knowing you.
